I was working as an aide de camp under General von Klutch. Exacting. Hard man to satisfy. Gave up trying after the first week.
There was a saying around the old wardroom -
"Never expose your flank to Old Klutchy!"
Well, I couldn't take Klutchy another night. So I assembled a modest caravan and hit the trail with Abdul. Ten miles out of that godforsaken place, Abdul came down with the rinderpest, and I had to leave him there to die. There was no other way about it. At the headwaters of the old river, I ran into an old Dutch trader -
"The quality runs high," he said. "Matter of fact, I lose money on this - this quality merchandise."
Small, and hunchback, missing two of his teeth, I haggled him out of a fair price.

The bar was nearly empty. I paid for my drinks, and walked out into the night.
